22 Mart tarixi, 1993-ci ildə Birləşmiş Millətlər Təşkilatının Baş Kabinetində elan edildiyindən bu yana Dünya Su Günü kimi qeyd edilir. Birləşmiş Millətlər Təşkilatının (BMT) Baş Assambleyası, 1992-ci ildə Rio de Janerioda təşkil edilən BMT Ətraf və İnkişaf Konfransında dünyada suyun gedərək artan əhəmiyyətindən ötəri hər il 22 Mart gününün "Dünya Su Günü" olaraq qeyd olunmasına qərar verilmişdir.
Bioloji cəhətdən öz inkişafında bir-birinə qarşılıqlı təsir göstərən torpağın, suyun, ağac, kol, ot bitkilərinin, heyvanat aləminin, mikroorqanizmlərin vəhdəti hesab edilən meşə sahələri Azərbaycanın ən qiymətli milli təbii sərvəti hesab olunur.
Azərbaycan ərazisinin fiziki-coğrafi şəraitinin müxtəlifliyi, relyefin və iqlimin xüsusiyyətləri, insanın fəaliyyəti hidroqrafik şəbəkənin müxtəlif inkişafını müəyyən edir. Hidroqrafik şəbəkəyə aid olan əsas su obyektləri – çaylar, göllər və su anbarları Respublikanın müxtəlif təbii vilayətlərində qeyri-bərabər paylanılıb.
